History

St. Christopher’s was formally constituted on 6 May 2006 by the Bishop of Europe and in January 2007 the Reverend Paul Needle was designated as Priest-in-Charge at Alcossebre. Initially ad hoc services had been held there in the home of the late retired priest, Reverend John Phillips. Then the local Roman Catholic priest invited John to hold services in San Cristobal and soon a pattern of monthly services evolved. As the English speaking population grew the services became twice monthly and on the Reverend Paul Needle’s appointment as a part time priest in charge, services moved to every Sunday.

The weekly services were, attracting people from Vinaros (20 miles north) and as far away as L’Ampolla, El Perello, and Tortosa (a further 25-30 miles north). In 2008 monthly services began in Vinaros and in 2009 in L’Ampolla, using the local Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist. Since 2010, twice-monthly services have been held in L’Ampolla, and their Drop-in-Centre, Bona Fè’ (Good Faith) opened in El Perello, some 6 KM North of there, three times a week, in 2012. El Camino (The Way*), Alcossebre’s Drop-in-Centre, opened in 2010, and was so successful that it moved to new and larger premises in January 2015. These Drop-in-Centres are a successful way of both raising much needed funds for the Church, but also, and most importantly, a window to our faith.
